Kabob Republic serves the best döner gyro in O.C.

Chef Ekrem Ozturk opened Kabob Republic in October, a spinoff of his eponymous Chef Ekrem’s Mediterranean Grill, a food stall he opened last year inside Irvine’s Wholesome Choice Grocery. The new restaurant is tiny but stunningly pretty, a blue-and-white jewel-box straight out of Santorini, or maybe Bodrum, with dozens of evil-eye pendants lining the walls to ward off bad luck and dark spirits. Chef Ozturk makes a fascinating mushroom dip with thickened kefir, which is a sort of Greek cream cheese. He boils the mushrooms with garlic and herbs, then folds them into the kefir. It’ll be an unfamiliar texture and flavor for a lot of diners, but I can’t imagine that anyone wouldn’t end up liking it. I can’t imagine anyone not liking the chicken breast kabobs, either. They appear to be marinated in yogurt, so juicy and tender yet lightly charred around the edges. Also noteworthy is the Beyti kabob, a ground beef kabob that’s wrapped in lavash and smothered in tomato sauce and butter. Halal, who?

75 Best Places To Eat in 2018

Every meal, every glass of wine, every taco, every tasting menu, every extra mile added to the odometer (always more than 10,000 for this pursuit)… everything I do all year adds up to this. Through all the highs and lows of an incessant dining routine, my mission is always clear: provide a roadmap to the best places to eat in Orange County. These are the pins on that map. Kabob Republic Chef Ekrem Ozturk’s tri-tip beef döner is easily the best kabob you’ll eat this year. Nothing else comes close. Kabob Republic is the first place I’ve found that actually reminds me of the flavors I originally fell in love with in Athens and Istanbul. This place is tiny but very pretty, a blue-and-white jewel box straight out of the Aegean islands. 1781 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa, 949-764-1778, kabobrepublic.com

20 Places For Cheap Eats In 2018

It’s easy to get carried away and accidentally spend a ton of money eating out in Orange County. It’s also easy to dine very well on the cheap. Here are my favorite places to eat very well for less than $20. 7. Kabob Republic You won’t find better Turkish and Greek kabobs than what chef Ekrem Ozturk grills on the spit here. Best thing on the menu: Tri-tip beef döner or the Beyti kabob (wrapped in lavash and smothered in tomato sauce). 1781 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa, 949-764-1778, kabobrepublic.com.

#9. KABOB REPUBLIC The new king of döner kabobs has been crowned. It’s a tiny Greek/Turkish cafe in Costa Mesa that seems to have come out of nowhere. Actually, it’s a spinoff of Chef Ekrem’s Mediterranean Grill, a food stall that opened last year inside Irvine’s Wholesome Choice Grocery and which nobody has ever heard of until now. Although not much bigger than a food stall, chef Ekrem Ozturk’s new freestanding restaurant is stunningly handsome, a blue-and-white jewel-box straight out of Santorini, or maybe Bodrum. The tri-tip beef döner kabob has no comparable rivals, and the kefir-creamed mushrooms will blow your mind. 1781 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa, 949-764-1778, kabobrepublic.com.
